I don't know about you, but I love reading and creating memes. They're perfect for placing on social media posts, which are going more and more image heavy. Today author Crystal Barnes shares some of her memes and provides tips to help you create your own. -- Sandy
Let’s just limit ourselves to memes for the moment. Okay, raise your hand—have you ever heard of a meme before? No? Here’s an example:
How ’bout now? Most folks have seen memes; they just don’t know that’s what they’re called. I didn’t the first time I heard the term. I didn’t even pronounce it right, but then again, I’m a Texan and can butcher words with the best of ’em. J
Vocabulary notwithstanding, I now make my own memes. I figured I’d share with y’all a few key things to remember when designing your memes:
Vocabulary notwithstanding, I now make my own memes. I figured I’d share with y’all a few key things to remember when designing your memes:
1. Make it easy to read
2. Use a cliffhanger or a hook from your story. Humor is good to use too.
- Don’t use fonts or colors that will clash or make the words hard to read.
- Don’t try to overload it with too long a script or too many images.
2. Use a cliffhanger or a hook from your story. Humor is good to use too.
- Remember the goal is to get them to go pick up your book. J
3. Be sure to include the title of your book, your name, and where they can buy it.
- Don’t make ’em work to find the info to go purchase your novel. You’ve hooked them, now reel ’em in. J
- This may or may not include the cover. You can have a good meme without the book cover on it, but it sure does help. J
- Here is an example provided by my buddy Janice Thompson.
Do y’all have any other items you’d like to add or a website you like to use for your memes? Have you tackled making your own memes before?

Hi Crystal, I have heard the term but yeah, didn't know what it means. This is a very interesting post. About the pix you suggest using.., I'm so worried about copywrite. Where do you get the ones you use? May God co to us to bless your writing!
ReplyDeleteHi, Tanya! I also create memes. Sometimes I use free photos from Pixaby.com. Other photos I purchase from BigStock.com for about $1 a piece (It's cheaper to purchase if you purchase credits in bulk that you can apply as needed.) I also use photos from both sites for my blog. With going that direction, I don't worry about copyright issues.
DeleteTanya, Canva has free images on their site, but if you read their terms, they do have restrictions. For instance, if you wanted to do a book cover, the image is only good for a certain number of books (it's very high). They also have images that cost $1. I try to use my own images, but will use some from Canva on occasion.
DeleteHi, Tanya! Dawn and Sandra are right. There are many places where you can find free photos. Pixabay.com and canva.com and imgflp also have free images. The shotgun image is one I actually used on my cover. Sometimes a simple textures (and there are plenty of free ones available) will work too.
DeleteThanks so much for stopping by today, Tanya. :)
I've been using morguefile.com for free images. So fun to hear about some more useful sites! Thanks!
DeleteGlad to help. :)
DeleteThanks for your post, Crystal!I love visuals, so I'm a fan of memes too. I've been creating them for my blog this past year - one a week - that fits my theme. I plan to use them in marketing my books when they're released later this year.
ReplyDeleteGlad to share, Dawn. We have such a visual society. I'm sure the memes are a great way to add some pizzazz to any post. :)
Deleteim also an artist so i enjoy creating memes! i also have a banner-meme of the series that i share from time to time.
ReplyDeleteHow cool, Robin. I'm a self-made artist - if that's even a thing. What do you do art-wise?
DeleteI also make my FB and webpage banners. They're like giant memes. :) So much fun.
Thanks so much for stopping by today. :)
Happy Trails!

DeleteThanks for your ideas here Crystal! I also create these and use them for inspirational information for my resilience blog. I enjoy it too. I want to take up painting again soon, but this hits the button for now and I get good feedback. I often use FreeDigitalPhotos for blogs or my own photos too. Loved meeting you at ACFW!
